And Into October We Go!

October 4, 2019

Dear Grade 3A Families,

This week our students learned about Orange Shirt Day and how Canada is working towards reconciliation with the First Nations Communities around residential schools. We are learning about our community, our province, and our country in Social Studies class. City planners are visiting on October 10th to demonstrate how they plan Calgary communities and what services are required.

In Math, we are looking at 2 and 3 digit numbers, and place value as we compare numbers.

This week in Science we made paper pillars to support books using the following shapes: triangular, rectangular, and circular. Ask your student how many books their stronger tower held up!!

We will be discussing how we all belong to great families. The students have taken home a web asking them about the languages they speak at home, what they eat if they have a special holiday (like Christmas or Eid) that they celebrate, what countries our ancestors are from, if they follow a religion, and the fun things they do with their families. Please have a conversation around these questions for next week. Everything we are preparing for will lead us to learn about India, Tunisia, Ukraine, and Peru in the upcoming months.

Simons Valley School is pleased to announce that Ryan Jason Allen Willert will be working with the staff and students in the role of Artist in Residence starting this upcoming week. Ryan is a full-time artist and storyteller born and raised in Southern Alberta. Although he was brought up in a non-native community, he has since reconnected with his Blackfoot roots (Siksika Nation). Ryan learned the art of black ink drawing from his father Richard (Dicky) Stimson, another well-known Siksika Nation artist. Among the many exhibitions where he has presented his work are the City of Calgary and Calgary’s Glenbow Museum. Ryan will be sharing the Buffalo teachings with our staff and students and in turn creating a mural in our multipurpose area. Please come hear him speak at the Parent Council meeting Thursday October 10th at 7pm.
